Indonesia's own State Secretariat describes KAN as "lembaga non struktural, yang berada di bawah dan bertanggung jawab kepada Presiden" — a non-structural institution under, and responsible to, the President. Its stated duty is to set accreditation and to advise BSN (the National Standardisation Agency) on accreditation and certification systems.
