Authorised Economic Operator Status (AEO)

What is this programme?

AEO (Authorised Economic Operator) is a status granted by the competent customs authority of an EU country to trusted trade operators who voluntarily meet a wide range of criteria. The European Commission (DG TAXUD) coordinates the legislation at EU level but does not grant the status itself — the application is made to the customs authority of the operator's own EU country.

Who is it for?

Businesses trading within/outside the EU seeking trusted-operator status in customs processes.

Who issues the certificate?

Status is granted directly by the member state's customs authority — there is no independent accredited certification body. Status granted in one member state is recognised by the customs authorities of all other EU member states (intra-EU mutual recognition).

What to verify before you accept it

Confirm current AEO status with the competent customs authority of the operator's EU country. Do not look for a 'certification body'.

What triggers an assessment?

• A business trading regularly within/outside the EU wants customs facilitation.
• A business partner or buyer names AEO status specifically.

What does it not replace?

• This is NOT a certification scheme; it is a government customs status. It should not be confused with certification programmes accredited by a private scheme owner (e.g. ISO certificates).
• Automatic mutual recognition with C-TPAT is not asserted; the US-EU Mutual Recognition Arrangement must be verified separately.
