What is this programme?
IATF 16949 is not an ISO standard but an automotive-specific certification scheme. Binding Rules apply to certification bodies recognised by IATF.
Who is it for?
Automotive manufacturers and direct automotive suppliers.
Who issues the certificate?
Only IATF-recognised certification bodies may issue the certificate, under rules set bindingly by IATF.
What to verify before you accept it
Confirm the OEM or customer requirement, and separately confirm the certification body's IATF recognition.
What triggers an assessment?
- An OEM or tiered supply chain customer requires it.
- Automotive parts are manufactured or supplied directly.
- An existing ISO 9001 system is being extended to automotive requirements.
What does it not replace?
- A general vehicle workshop, fleet operator or dealership is not automatically a candidate; a direct OEM or supply chain requirement is needed.
- It does not replace ISO 9001; it is built on top of it.
