What is this programme?
bluesign is a certification programme with SYSTEM, APPROVED and PRODUCT components, covering chemical input, material, manufacturing process and finished-product safety. It is owned by bluesign technologies ag (Switzerland), part of the SGS group.
Who is it for?
Chemical suppliers, fabric and yarn manufacturers, and garment brands using bluesign-approved material.
Who issues the certificate?
The programme is run and decided directly by bluesign technologies ag. From 27 September 2026, physical bluesign labels are being phased over to a new system called 'bluepass' — relevant to any business planning an application or renewal around that date.
What to verify before you accept it
Establish which level is being requested — SYSTEM PARTNER, APPROVED (chemical/material) or PRODUCT (finished product) — and, for applications after 27 September 2026, check the bluepass transition timeline.
What triggers an assessment?
- A brand or supplier requires bluesign APPROVED chemicals or materials.
- A bluesign PRODUCT label is targeted for the finished product.
- An application or renewal is planned after 27 September 2026 and the bluepass transition affects it.
What does it not replace?
- It does not carry the same claim as GRS or OEKO-TEX; bluesign focuses on chemical input and process safety, not recycled content or organic fibre.
- It is not accredited third-party certification; the programme is run directly by bluesign technologies ag.
