What is this programme?
FSSC 22000 is a certification scheme owned by Foundation FSSC. Audits are carried out by certification bodies that the scheme has both licensed and accredited.
Who is it for?
Organisations in food production, processing, packaging, storage and logistics.
Who issues the certificate?
The certificate is issued not by Foundation FSSC but by an independent certification body that the scheme has licensed and that is separately accredited.
What to verify before you accept it
Check three things separately: the certification body's scheme licence, its accreditation, and whether that accreditation covers your food chain category.
What triggers an assessment?
- A retailer or buyer asks for FSSC 22000 by name.
- A physical role is held in the food safety supply chain.
- A buyer audit for export requires GFSI recognition.
What does it not replace?
- It is not the same as ISO 22000; ISO 22000 is an ISO standard, FSSC is a separate scheme.
- It does not substitute for food business registration or approval.
