Scheme ownerForest Stewardship Council
What is this programme?
Chain of custody certification for forest-based products, packaging and trade. FSC-accredited independent certification bodies conduct the audits; FSC offices do not issue certificates.
Who is it for?
Furniture, paper, packaging, printing and wood product manufacturers and traders.
Who issues the certificate?
The certificate is issued by an independent body holding FSC accreditation; FSC's own offices do not issue certificates.
What to verify before you accept it
Check the material flow, who owns the product at each step, and how the label or claim may be used.
What triggers an assessment?
- An FSC label or claim will be applied to the product.
- Certified material is processed or repackaged.
- A buyer wants traceability of the certified material flow.
What does it not replace?
- A retailer selling only finished labelled products does not always need it; processing, repackaging and legal ownership are questioned.
- It is not the same programme as PEFC.
