Lexcel

What it is

The Law Society defines the scheme in its own words, verbatim: "Lexcel is our legal practice quality mark for client care, compliance and practice management."

The standard's subject areas are listed by the owner as: "client care", "risk management", "people management", "structure and strategy", "financial management", "information management" and "file and case management".

Lexcel runs in two versions. Lexcel England and Wales v6.1 is for practices operating in England and Wales, in two variants: law firms — partnerships, LLPs, sole practitioners, incorporated law firms and alternative business structures (ABS) regulated by the SRA — and in-house legal departments in companies, the public sector (including ABSs), law centres, not-for-profit organisations and government bodies. Lexcel International v5.1 is for practices in foreign jurisdictions or overseas branch offices.

The owner points to its own register of holders. Its Lexcel page links "Find a Lexcel member online" to a Find a Solicitor search filtered by accreditation, offers a download of a list of accredited practices, and states, verbatim: "This database is updated monthly."

Eligibility is drawn widely. The owner's page states, verbatim: "All legal practices and departments are eligible to apply for Lexcel, regardless of size or the type of work carried out. This includes sole practitioners and local authority legal departments."

Applying has three steps in the owner's own wording: "complete a self-assessment checklist for initial accreditation", "submit the application form" and "be assessed by an independent body". The self-assessment is the opening step of the application, not the outcome of the scheme — the outcome follows an assessment by a body other than the owner.

The Law Society states the timescale, verbatim: "The accreditation process takes around six months." It also states that how long the assessment takes depends on the number of areas of practice, the number of fee earners and support staff, and other quality standards the practice already holds, naming Investors in People and ISO 9001 as examples.

Fees run to two places. An annual registration fee is paid to the Law Society, calculated on the number of fee earners (for Lexcel International v5.1 for private practices, on the number of principals). On top of that, the owner's page states, verbatim: "You'll also need to pay an annual assessment fee directly to the independent assessment body you've chosen. Each assessment body has its own charging structure." This record reproduces no fee figures; the published tables carry separate columns and change over time.

Who owns it

Lexcel is owned by the Law Society of England and Wales, the professional body that publishes the standard and takes the annual registration fee. The owner's page carried its own date stamp of 08 July 2026 when it was opened on 2 September 2026.

Who assesses it

The assessment is carried out by a body other than the owner. The Law Society's application steps include, verbatim: "be assessed by an independent body", and the practice chooses which one: the owner's fee page states, verbatim: "You'll also need to pay an annual assessment fee directly to the independent assessment body you've chosen. Each assessment body has its own charging structure."

The owner names them. Its Lexcel assessments page states, verbatim: "You must choose one of the following licensed independent assessment bodies:" — Centre for Assessment, Inspiring Business Performance and Recognising Excellence — and adds, verbatim: "All qualified assessors have experience of the legal sector and have undergone Lexcel training." Whether any of the three holds accreditation from a national accreditation body was not verified from the pages opened, and this record makes no claim in either direction on that point.

Who asks for it

Public procurement. The only demand statement verified for this record is the Legal Aid Agency's contract condition, and that condition is an alternative one: the LAA states a firm holding a legal aid contract must have the SQM standard or Lexcel. Eligibility to apply is far wider than that condition — the Law Society states that all legal practices and departments are eligible regardless of size or type of work — and no source opened for this record names another buyer or authority that asks for Lexcel.

The Law Society states the legal aid link from its side, verbatim: "Your practice must have either Lexcel or the Specialist Quality Mark to hold a legal aid contract with the Legal Aid Agency".

The body that sets that condition, the Legal Aid Agency, states it in the same either-or form on its own guidance page; the Specialist Quality Mark record on this site carries the LAA's wording. Both owners describe one condition that can be met two ways, so this record does not present Lexcel as the single route to a legal aid contract.

Validity

The Law Society states: "Membership of the accreditation lasts for three years with an annual maintenance visit at the end of year one and year two." The re-accreditation cycle it publishes is annual maintenance visits at the end of year one (AMV1) and year two (AMV2), then a full re-assessment at the end of year three.
