The RvA is not a government agency — it is a private foundation, designated by the Dutch state in 2010 as the national accreditation body under EU Regulation 765/2008. In the RvA's own words, accreditation itself is 'a check on the check'.

The RvA describes itself (translated from Dutch): 'Bijna ieder land binnen Europa heeft een nationale accreditatie-instantie. In Nederland is dat de RvA' — almost every country in Europe has a national accreditation body; in the Netherlands, that is the RvA. It explains what accreditation is in one sentence: 'Accreditatie is dus een controle van de controle' — accreditation is a check on the check. Structurally, 'De RvA is een private stichting' (the RvA is a private foundation); 'In 2010 heeft de Nederlandse overheid de RvA aangewezen als nationale accreditatie-instantie, op basis van de Europese Verordening 765/2008' — in 2010 the Dutch government designated the RvA as the national accreditation body, on the basis of EU Regulation 765/2008.

Which schemes the RvA can accredit for — a dated, versioned list
The RvA publishes a list of the schemes it may accredit against (BR010) as a dated, versioned document — the version checked this round was dated 7 July 2026. Each entry names the normative document and the date it was added to the list; coverage is not static, and a scheme's presence on the list has its own effective date rather than being assumed retroactive.
