INAB is Ireland's single national accreditation body — not by the accrediting body's own claim, but by a specific clause in Irish law: Section 56A of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, inserted in 2014, names it directly.

Named in statute, and required to be independent
Section 56A(2) of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 (inserted by the Industrial Development (Forfás Dissolution) Act 2014) states: 'The Accreditation Board is the single national accreditation body for the purposes of the Accreditation Regulation' — 'the Accreditation Regulation' being Regulation (EC) No 765/2008. Section 56A(5) adds: 'The Accreditation Board shall be independent in the performance of its functions.' INAB's own institutional history runs through Forfás, not the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) — a claim sometimes made in secondary sources but not supported by INAB's own 'About Us' pages, which make no reference to NSAI.

International recognition — most scopes dated, one gap not resolved
European Accreditation's own signatory list (EA-INF/03, 26 May 2026) shows Ireland/INAB as an EA MLA signatory across most scopes with specific dates: calibration and testing since 17 June 1993, medical testing since 5 October 2006, product certification since 15 October 2002, management systems certification since 23 June 1998, validation and verification since 23 February 2023, proficiency testing since 27 April 2017, and reference material producers since 9 May 2019. The inspection bodies scope was read as blank/undated in that document, which conflicts with both INAB's own site and EA's live member directory — both of which list inspection bodies positively. This conflict has not been resolved; no date or status is asserted for inspection bodies here.
