What is this standard?

Applies to terrestrial animals bred or kept for the production of food or feed. It is aimed at helping organisations develop an animal welfare plan aligned with the principles of the WOAH/OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

Who is it for?

Organisations raising, keeping or processing terrestrial animals in the food and feed chain.

What triggers an assessment?

  • Terrestrial animals are bred or kept for food or feed production.
  • A buyer or retailer wants animal welfare assurance.
  • A gap analysis is to be run for an animal welfare plan.

What does it not replace?

  • It is a Technical Specification and is not presented as a full standard.
  • Research and educational animals, shelter and zoo animals, companion animals, stray and wild animals, and aquatic animals are out of scope.
