ISO 34101-1:2019

Sustainable Cocoa Management System

For producers, processors and buyers in the cocoa supply chain.

ClassManagement system standard

Edition2019

What is this standard?

Specifies sustainability management system requirements for cocoa bean farming. The ISO 34101 series is designed for use by everyone in the chain from farmers to cocoa purchasers, and features a stepwise farm development plan.

Who is it for?

Cocoa producers, cooperatives, processors and cocoa buyers.

What triggers an assessment?

  • A production or purchasing role exists in the cocoa supply chain.
  • A buyer requires a sustainable cocoa claim.
  • A stepwise improvement plan is to be established at farm level.

What does it not replace?

  • It is not a "cocoa certificate" on its own; certification scheme requirements sit in Part 4 of the series.
  • It does not substitute for organic or fair trade programmes.
