Who it binds
Suppliers of products the government has made subject to a mandatory safety standard, permanent ban or interim ban under the ACL — for example bicycle helmets, cots and fire extinguishers.
What it requires
Under the Australian Consumer Law, the Australian Government can set mandatory safety standards for specific product categories, and issue temporary or permanent bans. A supplier may not supply a product that fails to meet the mandatory standard that applies to it, or one that is banned. This is enforced by the ACCC at federal level alongside state and territory consumer protection agencies; the current list of covered product categories is maintained on Product Safety Australia.
