IAJapan is one of 3 ILAC MRA-signatory accreditation bodies listed here for Japan, alongside JAB, VLAC.
IAJapan is not Japan's sole accreditation body — it is one of five, coordinated under the Japan Accreditation Council (JAC): IAJapan, JAB, ISMS-AC, JASaff and VLAC. IAJapan itself, operated inside NITE under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, is recognized for only four narrow scopes: calibration, testing, reference material production and product certification.
How this body's authority is structured
Housed inside NITE, tied to METI by statute — but the Act's own text never uses the word 'accreditation'
IAJapan is not a separate legal entity but a division of NITE (National Institute of Technology and Evaluation), an independent administrative agency. The Act establishing NITE (Act No. 204 of 1999) ties it to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry: Article 13 states (translated) 'The competent minister and the competent ministry ordinance under the General Rules Act for NITE shall each be the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and the METI ordinance.' The Act grants NITE a general evaluation power (Article 11, paragraph 1, item 2), but the word '認定' (accreditation) does not appear anywhere in the Act's own text. IAJapan's actual accreditation authority instead comes from two separate sector-specific laws: the Measurement Act (Act No. 51 of 1992) for its JCSS calibration-laboratory programme, and the Industrial Standardization Act (Act No. 185 of 1949) for its JNLA testing-laboratory programme.

One of five accreditation bodies, not the only one — Japan Accreditation Council's own list
The Japan Accreditation Council (JAC), whose own page names its member bodies directly, lists five accreditation bodies operating in Japan: IAJapan, JAB (Japan Accreditation Board), ISMS-AC (information security management), JASaff (agriculture, forestry and fisheries) and VLAC (electromagnetic compatibility). This same five-body list was found independently, from a different source (Global ACI's own member registry) and on a different date, already on file for Japan's country record — two independent primary sources agreeing on the same structure.

A narrow, consistently-stated scope: calibration, testing, reference materials and product certification only
Three separate IAJapan pages — its own homepage, its APAC MRA page, and its Global ACI MRA page — each independently list the same four recognized scopes: calibration laboratories, testing laboratories, reference material producers, and product certification bodies. Inspection bodies (ISO/IEC 17020), proficiency testing providers (ISO/IEC 17043), certification of persons (ISO/IEC 17024), management systems certification (ISO/IEC 17021 series) and greenhouse gas validation/verification do not appear on any of IAJapan's own pages — those scopes, where covered in Japan at all, sit with other members of the five-body JAC structure, not IAJapan.

Two separate registers: JCSS has a real search engine, ASNITE a static filtered list
IAJapan's own entry point splits into separate programmes rather than one unified search. JCSS (calibration laboratories) has a genuine keyword search engine with AND/OR filtering. ASNITE (its broader accreditation scheme, roughly 149 entries) is a static, category-filtered list rather than a free-text search tool. Both require no login. JNLA's own register structure was not independently verified this round.
