ISO 22301:2019

Business Continuity Management System

For organisations where service interruption is critical, or that are multi-site or critical suppliers.

ClassManagement system standard

Edition2019

What is this standard?

Specifies business continuity management system requirements. It is a generally applicable standard; what drives the recommendation is not the sector but the need for interruption resilience.

Who is it for?

All sectors, with priority for finance, healthcare, IT, logistics, manufacturing, public sector and critical suppliers.

What triggers an assessment?

  • Service interruption has critical consequences for customers or the public.
  • A contract carries a continuity requirement.
  • A multi-site or critical operation is being run.

What does it not replace?

  • Having an emergency plan does not by itself indicate a certification need; the acceptable outage window is questioned.
  • It does not substitute for insurance or statutory emergency obligations.
